Everybody Was In The French Resistance… Now, Bristol Thekla

February 14, 2010

Everyone Was In The French Resistance… Now are the collaborative side-project of Eddie Argos (best known for being the frontman of Art Brut) and Dyan Valdes (The Blood Arm), together they produced an album of responses to songs, the most notable of which is the response to Avril Lavigne’s boy stealing anthem ‘Girlfriend’ entitled ‘G.I.R.L.F.R.E.N (You Know I’ve Got A) which can be heard on their myspace page here.

Eddie Argos is in some ways, the perfect front man. He manages to balance his musical duties with a healthy dose of, almost stand up like stage banter including lengthy anecdotes to introduce each song, all of which begin ‘Do you know the song?’ until he attempts to mix it up with other variations, none of which stick. The familiarity of both the dialogue and the relatively small area transforms the experience from merely watching a band to actively participating in an event.

The songs themselves are witty and clever without being knowingly so, they bring smiles to the faces of those watching and the occasional laugh as they stray towards the ridiculous. The marriage of Eddie Argos’ particular brand of ‘talk-singing’ and Dyan Valdes vocals works strangely well together, with her taking on the role of backing singer for most of the night while supplying the soundtrack to the songs on keyboard. The music itself is almost enough to tie the songs to those they are responding to, from the frantic, short Superglue (a response to Elastica’s ‘Vaseline’) to the melancholy sound of ‘Think Twice (It’s Not Alright)’ which see’s Eddie Argos venturing out into the crowd and serenading members of the audience.

You come away from the venue with the same satisfied feeling that you would associate with having spent a worthwhile night in a pub with a set of close friends, with the high that comes of good conversation and company all set to a brilliantly complimentary soundtrack, only in this case all of this is provided by those that occupy the stage.
