Reel Big Fish, O2 Academy Oxford

January 22, 2010

Despite the fairly miserable weather outside the crowd inside the O2 Academy are in alarmingly good spirits, after seeing two solid support acts in Sonic Boom Six and Big D and the Kids Table it’s clear that everyone cannot wait to see the headlining band. Men in hawaiian shirts can be easily spotted around the room and there are a large proportion of Reel Big Fish t-shirts on those in the crowd, most of which are decidedly faded and well-worn, clearly showing the years of devotion these people have put into this band and for good reason.

Reel Big Fish take to the stage and burst into the song they gained mainstream recognition with, ‘Sell Out’ and the audience love it. The crowd sing back, word perfect and there are few that aren’t either jumping or dancing to the upbeat sounds that fill the venue. It is almost impossible to spot a person who isn’t moving in some form as they play through a staggering amount of songs, smiles creep onto watching faces as the band banters with one another and people sing back the expletives in songs such as ‘Fuck You’ and ‘Another F.U Song’ with relish.

With an album full of covers, and one of their most loved songs being their version of ‘Take On Me’ by A-Ha the appearance of a few cover songs intermingled with their own songs is not at all out of the ordinary, however the real suprise of the night is when they decide to show the crowd that they’re not just a bunch of fun loving ska-punk dudes. Reel Big Fish reveal that they are actually masters of all genres of music, showcasing their talent at playing their song S.R in the style of Punk, Blues Jam, Disco, Country and Western and Death Metal, nailing each of them with the kind of skill that you’d never expect from a band that seem so comfortable in their genre.

Seeing Reel Big Fish was a truly enjoyable experience from start to finish and I’ll be sure to see them next time they tour, I recommend you do too if you know what’s good for you!
