Motion City Soundtrack – Her Words Destroyed My Planet

January 8, 2010

The best, and only definitively conclusive test you can do in order to determine whether or not a song is good is to play it, back to back and see how long you can stand it until you want to punch something just to make it stop. I’ve listened to this track around 10 times consecutively so far and all I can think is that it just keeps getting better. The track is essentially three and half minutes of ‘what if’, with Justin Pierre thinking about what would have happened if he hadn’t gotten dumped three years ago, and with lyrics such as  ‘If we’d only stayed together / I might not have fallen apart / But the words you served destroyed my planet‘ it’s clear that it hasn’t been an easy journey from that point.

Once again Mark Hoppus (Blink 182/+44) took on the production duties and it’s clear to see that it’s a match made in heaven, while many fans may lament the less obvious sounds of the synth that had become synonymous with Motion City Soundtrack it’s clear that the band have progressed, and despite the comments on the first listen on Spin.com I think it’s for the better. They’ve still retained their own sound, Justin Pierre’s voice is as recognizable as ever and the overall sound of the song is reminiscent of those on their debut I Am The Movie, something that is undeniably a good thing. With the members of the band settling down or getting clean this record was never going to be quite like the others and for that, I’m glad.

My Dinosaur Life will be released on January 19th.

I agree, the whole album is pretty awesome. And I don’t miss the synth.
